When creating animal fusions it’s best to shoot the photos with the animals in a similar position and with lighting that is consistent between each photograph. Doing these things makes the workflow when you fuse them together in Photoshop much easier. (Left) After placing a cut-out of the cat over where I want it to be fused, I created a mask on the cat layer so I could blend the two layers together using a soft brush tool. Oh, well — they’re versatile creatures. For this animal fusion I took each photo in the same place: A barn. The lighting for each animal was already consistent between the photos. The only challenge was to get the animals in similar positions and, after waiting a while for them to actually get into position, I was able to get the shots I needed to blend them together. The image begins and ends at the pavilion near the parking lot, which makes creating a miniature planet of the scene extremely easy once everything is lined up. Much of the work in creating this kind of imagery is in the planning. Make sure that the sky and ground of the panorama are consistent textures (for example, in summer I would want the whole ground to be grass), and ensure that the left and right sides of the panorama have buildings or trees that are roughly the same height. Many wires and poles shoot off the edge of the image, and finding the right place to shoot the panorama without getting ran over by cars was tricky. You’ll notice that for the panorama (which isn’t a full 360-degree shot), I made sure that the sidewalk was on the left and right edges of the image. At the lens’ widest, the light coming through the glass doesn’t even cover the entire sensor of the camera. It’s only when you zoom out to 15mm that images begin to fill the whole frame. Macro photography requires a lot of light in order to get a fast enough shutter speed and a decent aperture to bring out detail. The quarter in the middle is the same quarter shot with a 70-200mm lens at its minimum focus distance — meaning I could only be a few feet close to the quarter with that lens before it became out of focus. The quarter to the right is the same quarter as the one in the middle, blown up to the same size as the quarter on the left. For the longest time the masthead of the newspaper was a simple design that didn't represent the paper or the county it covers at all. Each year Big Rapids has festival called Tuba Bach where musicians hold different events and play a variety of music with one constant: a tuba is always included. Each year the paper supports Tuba Bach and so we do a photo shoot to promote the event. This particular year I wanted to step outside of the box a bit. I called up a previous contact, the one and only Doctor Pol from "The Incredible Doctor Pol" to ask if I could use his DeLorean for a "Bach to the Future" photo shoot. The rest is history. The event is always challenging to photograph because it can be so dark, but with flash and a white tent canvas above me it's a lot easier.
